If one makes a straight bet on the Pistons, it means that this team will win the game by 8 points. On the other hand, wagering on Detroit means betting even if they lose the other team will only win only as much as 8 points.

If for instance the final score comes out as: Pistons 100 vs. Detroit 98. If the bettor wagered on Pistons, he would have lost since the team didn't win by 8 points.

In the example, this particular basketball game has a total sore of 198 points which went over the predicted 196 combined points made by the line makers, hence the game went over. If the total combined score is less 196 points, this means the game went under.

For a more realistic view, if the bettor wagered $100 on Pistons, his loss is also $100. Conversely, if he wagered on Detroit, he is putting down $110 in order to win $100. This is listed on the sportsbooks as 10/11, which means winning 10 by losing 11. In this case the loser paid more than what the sportsbook listed, and what the latter paid to the winner is the net profit or the juice.

As an advice, it is always best to look for sportsbooks or sports gambling sites that have small juice. And always bet on sportsbooks that move their lines; this is how sportsbooks even out the wagers made by all the punters for a more fair game.
